UptimeTea

Is AWS down right now?

Checking AWS…

Reading the latest checks from UptimeTea monitors…

Amazon Web Services runs servers, databases and storage for a huge share of the internet. A bad day in one AWS region can take thousands of unrelated apps offline.

What we are checking

These are real UptimeTea monitors, not a scrape of AWS's own status page. Each is requested every minute from several locations, and a failure is re-verified from an independent location before it counts.

Checking…

AWS website

aws.amazon.com, the public AWS site and documentation entry point.

Checking…

AWS Management Console

console.aws.amazon.com, where teams sign in to manage their AWS resources.

Second opinion: AWS's official status page. Vendors update it after they confirm an incident, which is usually minutes after it starts.

What to do when AWS is down

  1. 1

Find out which region is hit

AWS outages are almost always regional. The AWS Health Dashboard lists incidents per service and per region. If yours is not listed, look at your own resources first.

  2. 2

Fail over if you planned for it

Multi-region or multi-AZ setups exist for exactly this moment. If you have a standby region, now is when to switch traffic. If you do not, avoid redeploying into the broken region.

  3. 3

    Expect knock-on outages

Many SaaS tools run on AWS. When us-east-1 has trouble, your CI, chat and payment providers may fail too. Check their status before debugging your own code.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know if AWS is down?
UptimeTea monitors load aws.amazon.com and the AWS console every minute from several locations. They catch broad outages of AWS's public front door. Regional service outages show on the AWS Health Dashboard first.
AWS status is green but my app is failing. Why?
The public dashboard often lags behind real incidents, and it only lists confirmed, widespread problems. Check your account's Personal Health Dashboard, which shows events affecting your specific resources.
Why does one AWS region take down so many sites?
Many companies run everything in one region, most often us-east-1. Some global AWS features also depend on that region. When it fails, apps without a second region go down with it.
Can I get an alert when my app on AWS goes down?
Yes. Monitor your own site or API in UptimeTea and you are told the moment it fails, whoever is at fault. Checks from multiple locations also show whether an outage is regional.
