What to do when Twilio is down

    Check the carrier, not just Twilio

    SMS delivery depends on mobile carriers too. The official status page lists carrier and country incidents separately from API outages.

    Offer a second way to verify

    If users log in with SMS codes, let them fall back to email or an authenticator app. Otherwise a Twilio outage becomes a login outage.

    Queue messages instead of dropping them

    Retry failed sends with backoff and a limit. Messages sent a few minutes late beat messages that never go out.

Most failures are delivery issues: a carrier filtering the message, an unregistered sender number or a number that cannot receive SMS. The message logs in the Twilio Console show the exact error code.
