What to do when Claude is down

    Separate the app from the API

    claude.ai, the API and Claude Code can fail independently. The official status page lists them as separate components. Check the one you actually use.

    Retry with backoff, not in a loop

    An overloaded error means capacity is tight, not that your request is wrong. Retry with exponential backoff so your app does not add to the queue.

    Have a fallback message ready

    If your product depends on Claude, show users a clear 'AI features are temporarily unavailable' notice instead of a spinner that never ends.

How do you know if Claude is down?
UptimeTea monitors request claude.ai and anthropic.com every minute from several locations. A failed check is re-verified from an independent location before it counts. The API needs a key, so for API health check the official status page or monitor your own endpoint.
Claude says it is overloaded. Is it down?
Not quite. An overloaded error means Anthropic is shedding load during peak demand. Requests usually succeed a few seconds later. The official status page marks these periods as elevated errors.
Does a claude.ai outage affect the Anthropic API?
Not always. They share models but not all infrastructure. It is common for one to be degraded while the other works normally.
